Projects at Rodeheaver Livestock & Forage Facility

The Rodeheaver Livestock and Forage Facility in Southwestern Putnam County is a demonstration facility designed to provide producers with educational information about sustainable livestock and forage production.

Pasture & Forage Land

A large portion of the acreages of the Tri-County Agricultural Area are devoted to both improved and unimproved pasture land and forage land. These acreages account for a huge amount of the total green space of the region and as such provide not only productive agricultural space for food and fiber production, but also provide a tremendous area for water recharge, wildlife habit and various natural ecosystems, from Flatwoods type ecosystems to sandhill ecosystems.

In appreciation of the tremendous biological diversity these areas represent, as well as the agricultural productivity they provide, we at the Partnership are working on ways to keep these areas productive while protecting their biological diversity and value as ground water recharge areas.

Livestock & Forage Demonstrations

Our main focus at the Rodeheaver facility is livestock and forage demonstrations. Current demonstration projects include Managing the Cow/Calf Herd-utilizing Body Condition Scores, Alternative Conserved Forage Demonstration, Branding Season Chute-side Techniques, Pre-Calving Season Management Techniques, Hay Storage Demonstration, Bahia Pasture Renovation, Cool Season Forage Variety Trial, and Demonstration and Evaluation of Municipal BioSolids for Forage Production. In addition, there is an active 4-H Horse program and 4-H Beef program at the ranch.
